Study Notes for Health Test Friday Feb. 5

Diabetes

More than three million Canadians have diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes, usually diagnosed in children and adolescents, occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose in the blood.  Approximately 10% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes 90 % have Type 2 diabetes which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin that is produced.  Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adulthood,  although increasing numbers of children in high risk populations are being diagnosed.
Gestational diabetes, is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy.  It affects approximately 2-4 % of all pregnancies and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.

If left untreated or improperly managed diabetes can result in a variety of complications including:

Heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, nerve damage

Symptoms include:

Unusual thirst
Frequent urination
Weight change
Extreme fatigue
Blurred vision
Frequent or recurring infections
Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
Tingling or numbness in hands or feet.

Many who have type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

Can you prevent diabetes?

Research shows that lifestyle changes can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.  A healthy meal plan, weight control, and physical activity are important prevention steps.

Kinasao Fund Raiser - Canteen For Deep Freeze

January 4, 2016
Dear Parents,
This Saturday the grade 5 & 6 classes are running the canteen for the Deep Freeze basketball tournament, hosted at SCS.  This is one of our biggest Camp Kinasao fundraisers!  The tournament starts Friday and runs all day Saturday from 8am to 8pm.
We are asking for food and drink donations.  Soup or chili and a bun are big sellers.  It works well when a batch of soup or chili is donated in a crockpot.  Powerade and pop are also big sellers.  Please drop off items in Mr.L’s classroom.  Soup/chili needs to be dropped off on Friday since there is limited space in the kitchen this week.
We also need a few parents and students to work in the canteen.  A schedule will be set up once the sign-up is complete.  You will be notified if and when you are working the canteen!
Please review the lists and sign up below.  There is an items donation section, as well as a timetable to volunteer your time working the canteen (We will only need 1-2 adults per shift).  Return the form ASAP this week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. L or Mr. B.  Thank you in advance for your support.
Mr. Letkeman
